Pope Urban II calls for a crusade
During the Middle Ages, Muslim Turks defeated the Byzantines and took control of their land.
The Byzantine emperor asked Pope Urban II to help him defend the Christian empire.
In 1095 Pope Urban II called upon Europe's lords to launch a crusade, or holy war against the Muslim Turks and capture Jerusalem.

Known for calling the First Crusade. He promised those who fought exemption from doing penance and those who died full remission from their sins. He also promised the families of those who fought full protection under the Church. He also declared that if anyone harmed the Crusaders, they would be excommunicated.
Salahudeen (Saladin)
He united the Muslims and declared war against the crusaders. He was a brilliant commander and was known for his honorable behavior towards his enemies. He captured Jerusalem in 1187.
King Richard I of England
Also known as Richard the Lion-Hearted, he united his army with the armies of King Philip II of France and Emperor Frederick of the Holy Roman Empire against Salahudeen. He managed to secure a small territory and then agreed to a truce after Salahudeen promised that Christian pilgrims could travel to Jerusalem in safety.
